Freezing rain leaves Indiana roads icy; crashes reported

Staff Writer

Authorities say roads in parts in Indiana are icy following freezing rain and light snow, prompting warnings from police and leading dozens of schools to delay the start of classes.
Multiple crashes were reported Wednesday morning in central Indiana. The National Weather Service says patchy freezing drizzle and snow were reported, with light snow showers expected to continue on and off through the day on Wednesday.
Dozens of schools announced delayed starts due to the weather.
Northern Indiana also was affected by freezing rain. Police in Lafayette warned of very icy conditions in the area and said there were numerous crashes.
In Adams County, several slide-offs were reported by witnesses on U.S. 27. While roads didn't appear to be slippery, a thin layer of ice caused slick conditions that may have caught some drivers off guard.
