A new officer will be patrolling the hallways in the Adams Central School System, though instead of footprints, his mark will be left with paws. The new semester for the school has brought along the introduction of a new Student Resource Officer K9 Assistant, Jet, who will be partnering with Officer Mike Mendoza. Jet is a golden retriever and is a non-aggression dog that will specialize in detection and handling emotional situations.
“I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Jet,” said Superintendent Joel Mahaffey. “He licked my hand once so I would assume that we bonded.”
It was explained at the January meeting of the district’s School Board that the K9 officer is first and foremost going to be used to improve the safety of students and the security of the school. He will have the ability to sniff out and find substances and objects that should not be present in an educational facility. However, he will also be able to help some students through providing therapy.
“The primary reason is the safety of the school,” stated High School and Middle School Principal Katie Isch. “I had the privilege of walking down the hallway with Officer Mendoza and Jet and every student that you pass just smiles and really lights up and that is just a really neat experience, that we can keep our school safe in a way that is emotionally comforting to our students.”
Mahaffey explained that while the new K9 officer is an extension to the Student Resource Officer contract with the Adams County Sheriff’s Department, the topic needed Board approval to protect the school’s liability.
To welcome the new member of the Adams Central family, there will be a “Puppy Shower” for Jet on Friday, January 27th from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the AC vs. Heritage Basketball Game. The public is invited to come meet “Jet” and they will be accepting donations. Items being accepted include dog treats, dog toys, and monetary donations for Adams County K-9.
