Over the next couple weeks, the Decatur Daily Democrat will be accepting submissions for the annual “How to Cook a Turkey,” section of the November newspaper. Sales Representative Becki Trobridge explained that the section aims to get the advice of elementary aged students and younger on how to prepare the pinnacle of the Thanksgiving dinner.
“‘How to Cook a Turkey’ started a long time ago as just a fun thing that we would interview the kids throughout the community,” said Trobridge, “we would send it out to the elementary schools, and they would tell us how they thought turkeys were made. Some of the answers are just gut-bustlingly hilarious.”
Trobridge explained that she has been reading the section in the paper since she was very young. She explained that one of her favorite submissions included one of the elementary school students who told the reporter that the cook needed to preheat the oven to 150 degrees and then bake the turkey for five minutes. The turkey would then promptly be stuffed with carrots and onions and then it was perfectly ready to go.
“It is just a fun way of what we think and how we think the kids of the community perceive us making Thanksgiving turkey,” said Trobridge, “it’s just a fun little section that we do in light of the holidays.”
This year, submissions for the “How to Cook a Turkey” section of the newspaper will run on Saturday, November 19th. Rather than going into specific elementary school classes, submissions will be accepted on the Decatur Daily Democrat website starting now and they will be accepted up until Thursday, November 17th. This way, any children ages 5th grade and under can have a statement sent in for them.
