Republicans in Decatur decided the outcome of three contested races for City Council Tuesday night with two of the three incumbents being ousted in favor of their challengers.
Although incumbent Matt Dyer, the GOP at-large representative defeated Tim Ehlerding 472-449 in a highly contested race, incumbents Wylie Sirk and Craig Coshow both were defeated with Gina Melcher taking a narrow 121-117 victory from Sirk and Abby Wilder earning a solid 191-161 triumph against Coshow.
In the Clerk-Treasurer's race, Kevin Hackman downed Amy Gage 481-421 to run in the fall general election for the Republicans.
Running uncontested for the Republicans was Scott Murray, a Fourth District incumbent Councilman with 148 votes while Democrats without foes in their party included Mayor Dan Rickord with 162 votes, and Second District City Councilman Tyler Fullenkamp with 46. Jennifer Hitchcock was an unopposed Democrat in the at-large race with 164 votes, while Jenny Bowers-Shultz had 45 votes in the First District Democratic primary.
Only 16.45 percent of eligible city voters participated in Tuesday's election.
More details on the election will be available in Thursday's Daily Democrat as election results were not available for Wednesday's paper at our deadline.
