Schedule for Friday Sculpture Tour kick-off unveiled

The Decatur Sculpture Tour is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year with a record number of sculptures to view and a new look to the bases on which they will be featured.
The tour will provide 31 original exhibits displayed on the 2nd Street Gallery from Jackson Street to Five Points; and added to this are exhibits on 3rd Street from Jefferson Street (Storybook Park) to Madison Street (Collier Insurance).
Many sculptures will also line Monroe Street from 1st to 7th streets (to include the permanent exhibit at the police station).
Residents and tourists will be treated to various styles of art and materials used to create these one-of-a-kind displays. Susan Roe, Decatur Sculpture Tour committee member, stated that over the first four years, it is clear when a visitor has their favorite. “They become down-right protective. This year, a group of ambitious fundraisers set out to purchase the People’s Choice. They did not want it to return to Colorado. There will be a picture taken with the artist this month. The full amount was raised and the ‘Let Freedom Ring’ exhibit will find its permanent home in Founders Park.”
Coni Mayer, Decatur Sculpture Tour committee member, said she has seen first-hand the impact of the tour from her office on 2nd Street. “There is no doubt this 10-month event brings people to our town. In nice weather, I will see mothers and fathers pushing strollers or pulling wagons, bicyclers, walkers and tour-groups with brochure in hand walking the streets. They pause at each exhibit to read about the artist and the exhibit.”
In 2012, the DST offered 12 exhibits for residents and tourists to enjoy. This year, the committee announces they have more than doubled the number of sculptures. With 31 new exhibits, one leased exhibit and 15 permanent exhibits on display, the DST now offers 47 exhibits on display.
The 2016 tour will feature works from 18 artists from six states (Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri and Ohio) with $244,300 insured original pieces of artwork.
The 2016 unveiling ceremonies will take place June 10. Following is a schedule of the days festivities:
