Patriots hold down Braves 5-3

    "How 'bout dem Patriots," said Heritage coach Dean Lehrman after his charges clipped Bellmont 5-3 Tuesday, to improve to 10-5 overall.
    "It has been many a year since Heritage has beaten the Bellmont Braves on a baseball field," pointed out the veteran coach.
    Hurler Kyle Evans spun five innings of four-hit ball against the hot-hitting Bellmonters, allowing one earned run with a walk and two strikeouts. Cole Gerardot did give up two runs on three hits, but held off the Braves to earn the save.
    The Pats broke open a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fourth with a four-run outburst as Nick Spieth had knocked in two of those runs with a hit. The Braves rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh before Gerardot got the final out.
    Josh Macklin took the loss for BHS, yielding four earned runs on seven hits. He did have 10 strikeouts and only one walk.
    Brian Hakes had a rare pitching appearance, and took advantage of it by tossing 1.2 innings of no-hit ball, striking out two with a walk.
    Nick Spieth had two hits and for the Pats while Bryan Shuler and Mitchell Castleman both drove in runs with hits.
    Nick Fuelling stroked two hits for the Braves while Gunnar Cale drove in ntwo with a hit in the seventh inning. Brian Fullenkamp knocked in a run with a hit in the opening inning.
    Carroll will be at Bellmont at 6:30 p.m. tonight for an NHC game. Bellmont will be at New Haven for a key loop game next Tuesday at 5 p.m.
    Heritage will be at Adams Central today at 5 p.m. for an ACAC game. The Pats will host Wayne at 10 a.m. Saturday.
