Murphy breaks record in discus

NEW HAVEN-Bellmont track was back in action and they did so with a splash Saturday at the New Haven Relays as Mason Murphy crushed his personal best and Chadd Keller’s school record in the discus with a throw of 171-4. Keller’s record of 166-5 had stood for 13 years.
After a lost season last year and no official throws, Murphy had made big strides, but even he probably did not expect to reach 170 feet in the opening meet of the season.
“That distance would have finished third at state my sophomore year,” said Murphy. “I think I am probably in the top five now in the state and I want to keep going. It felt good to break the record right away.”
