Monroe 14-U squad cops crown

    The home team from Monroe won the 2011 Brickhouse Baseball Tournament for 14-year-olds and under by a commanding 16-6 score over New Haven on Sunday.
    The Monroe squad had 10 hits, led by Koty Frauhiger's triple, two doubles by Clayton Harkless, a double by Justin Fuentes, two singles from Carter Sharp, and two singles by Eli Hill.
    New Haven managed seven hits, topped by Masellett's double and single and two singles by Graham.
    The winning pitcher was Luke Liter, with two strikeouts and a walk. Harkless relieved him and had seven strikeouts and two walks.
    Graham got the loss as he struck out three and walked four. Murphy also pitched and struck out three, while walking none.
    Overall, the Monroe squad had 50 runs and 51 hits in four tourney games, made three double plays (two by Harkless), and had "great team effort, with all players contributing to the victory." according to the coaches.
    The Monroe unit also won these games:

    Monroe had nine hits: Liter, Fuentes, and Tanner Butler had two-baggers, Liter and Fuentes also singled, and Frauhiger hit two singles.
    For VW, Brant Henry hammered a two-run homer and Tussing hit three singles as the team had seven hits.
    Sharp picked up the win, with four strikeouts and two walks. Cody Crump, Matt Baker, and Harkless also pitched and each had one K and one BB.
    The loss went to McCracken, who struck out four and walked five. Gardner and Henry also pitched, with Henry striking out five and Gardner whiffing two.
    •12-9 over the Fort Wayne Flippin' Frogs.
    Monroe collected 17 hits, with Hill tripling and singling, Butler doubling, Fuentes doubling and also singling twice, and Sharp, Harkless, Liter, and Frauhiger each hitting a pair of singles.
    For Fort Wayne, with nine hits, Hissing powered a grand slam and tripled, Chao doubled and singled, Goodrich doubled, and Lutz hit two singles. Hissong drove in five runs.
    Harkless (the starter) got the W, with eight strikeouts and three walks. Luke Liter added three strikeouts.
    For the Frogs, Lutz was the loser. He, Chao, and starter Noll combined for six strikeouts (three by Noll) and four walks.
