Mat Starfires top Jets 38-18

BERNE  — Cody Conner cradled Adams Central sub Luke Marbach for a 2:50 fall at 189 pounds, creating the sixth lead change in the ACAC dual, and igniting a 38-18 victory for the host Starfires Thursday night.
"The kids that were on the mat wrestled well. You can't spot them 12 and let them steal a couple and expect to win," stated Adams Central coach Doug Schultz, noting forfeits in two of the last three weight classes on the line at the Stardome.
"In the matches we had the right guy in, we did okay. They stole one at 112 and at heavyweight. We think we can turn those around," Schultz, noting the upset of Cody Walburn at 112 by SA's LJ Moser, and freshman Maverick Morningstar's surprising 6-3 win over AC senior Nick Heyerly.
Moser, now a healthy 12-1 on the season, came out of a scramble on top in the waning seconds of the first period,, and those points held for the only score of the match as Walburn rode out Moser, and the SA sophomore returned the favor in period three, though there was some controversy.
After about a five-minute discussion, 10 seconds were put back on the clock after the original conclusion of the match because Moser was given a stalling warning and the official did not stop the match and re-start it at that point. With new life, Walburn was scrambling for a switch when time ran out.
"I was really happy to see Moser come throught like that at 112," stated South Adams coach Eric Myers, whose Starfires are now 13-0 for the season. The Jets slipped to 5-2, but 0-2 in the ACAC.
" I think LJ got worked over by him last year and ended up going to 112 and got beat on a little bit there. He's really worked hard in the off-season and this was his chance to shine and he did. To get that takedown right at the end of the first period, that was really big."
In the final match of the night, with the Stars up 29-18 after the forfeit at 215 and before the forfeit at 103, Morningstar caught Heyerly near the edge of the match and scored, and later turned the senior for the 6-3 win.
"Heyerly's a solid kid, so we were happy to get that win there. It was a big one for Morningstar," said Myers.
There were several key showdowns, including a 5-4 win by senior Josh Ehr over Jarod Schwartz at 152 pounds in a battle of former state streeters. Schwartz hit a third-period reversal, then Ehr worked on a Peterson roll and finally locked it in with 25 seconds left for the victory.
"We were both going at it pretty hard," said Ehr, who didn't like the first takedown call in the opening period when Schwartz was trying to climb up his legs for a takedown.
He knows there will be more meetings. "I'm looking forward to it. There's some good competition (at 152) around this area," noted the senior, who felt his semistate loss last year in the round to go to state ruined his season. "I want to go down to state and stand on top of that podium. That loss last year cost me the season. I still feel the fire inside."
After Moser's win,,Derek Roe scored a fall for the Jets over Eric Pimentel, then unbeaten Starfire Todd Batt downed Ellinger 21-5 for a tech fall at 125. Josh Schwartz came right back with a 5-0 win over Shea Pyle of SA, the veteran Gabe Sprunger downed Zach Yoder of AC 8-5 in a match that Schultz felt was a good one for Yoder.
Blake Thieme scored a second period takedown to beat Charlie Hirschy 2-1 at 140 for the Jets, and junior Zeke Schultz stopped Jordan Landers 6-0 at 145.
Chantz Luginbill had a strong showing against Adam Hofstetter of SA in a 4-1 win. SA's Isaac Werst had a four-point finish to top AC's Taylor Isch at 171.
The Jets were without their starters at 103 and 189.
Schultz felt that a few of his kids showed signs of conditioning problems. "It comes down to weight control. That's something that we can fix," said the coach.
The Jets will be at Delta Saturday for a super dual while the Starfires go to New S. Adams 38, Adams Central 18
