Mary H. Werling Melching

    Mary H. Werling Melching, 104, of Decatur, passed away on Monday, November 12, 2012, at 2:02 a.m. at Woodcrest Nursing Center.
    She was born in Hillisburg, Indiana, on August 22, 1908, to the late James F. Halberstadt, Sr. and the late Flava Ploughe.
    Mary married Dorus D. Werling on January 22, 1927, in Decatur; he passed away on June 29, 1931.
    She then married Edward T. Melching on August 15, 1936, in Columbia City; he passed away on April 8, 1985.
    Mary was a member of the Pleasant Mills Baptist Church, where she played piano for over 30 years. She was also a member of the Adams County Historical Society, the Indiana Branch of the Sons & Daughters of the Pilgrims, the Indiana Pioneers, and organizing Regent of the Antoine Rivarre Chapter NSDAR. She was a homemaker and had worked at the General Electric Decatur plant for four years and at Old Cloverleaf Creamery for three years. 
    Among survivors are a daughter, D. Ann (Harvey) Jones of Decatur; son, Don A. (Marlene) Melching of Decatur; eight grandchildren, Becky (Paul) Allison, Diane (Ron) Walters, Tom Werling, Kim (Ron) Dietrich, Jim (Jody) Jones, Kristie (Kevin) Ripley, W. Edward (Cheri) Melching, and Lori (Fred) Sauer; three stepgrandchildren, Chris Fitzgerald, Richard (Sherry) Fitzgerald, and Scott Fitzgerald;16 great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; 12 great great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by a son, Melvin (Peck) Werling; a sister, Ruth Neuenschwander; and two brothers, Thomas and James Halberstadt Jr.; one brother and one sister in infancy; stepdaughter Tharine Fitzgerald; and grandson Dan Werling.
    Visitation will be from 2-5 and 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, November 14, at the Woodcrest-Porter Auditorium. 
    Funeral Services will be at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 15, also at the Porter Auditorium, with Pastor Richard Sprunger officiating.
    Burial will be in the Decatur Cemetery.
    Preferred memorials are to Pleasant Mills Baptist Church or Antoine Rivarre Chapter NSDAR.
