A look back: 1980 All-star wrestling match

40 years ago this month, a team of traveling wrestlers, all national champions in their native home of Japan, embarked on a sort-of “barnstorming” tour of the Midwest. Wrestling exhibitions against teams of local all-stars, this team was led by Olympic coach Yukitaka Takiyama.
Takiyama was forced to tour foreign countries with his team because, like the United States, the country of Japan did not participate in the 1980 Summer Olympics, which were held in the Soviet Union. With only 35 nations competing in that year’s games, the Japanese team had to get creative to stay competitive.
