Jets survive tough Indy test; go 2-3 at Warren Central

INDIANAPOLIS — Adams Central went 2-3 in their toughest super dual of the season Saturday at Warren Central, beating Carmel and Northwestern while losing by a point to Roncalli, 37-36. Ben Davis beat the Jets 46-23 and host Warren Central, rated fifth overall in the state, dumped the Jets 52-18.
"We let Roncalli slip through our fingers, and we could have gotten Ben Davis, but we gave up too many sticks," stated veteran Central coach Doug Schultz. The Jets took out Northwestern 78-3, and bested Carmel, one of the largest schools in the state, 51-15.
Sophomore Luke Liter and junior Derek Ellinger were the only Jets' grapplers who went 5-0 on the day, with senior Cody Walburn suffering his first loss of the season against Warren Central. Senior Ben Pfister also lost against Warren Central in a controversial overtime decision.
"We faced some big schools and in the two meets we lost our kids met some pretty strong wrestlers. Our younger wrestlers faced upperclassmen who were just physically stronger and we gave up a lot of falls," noted Schultz.
The final duals prior to this Saturday's ACAC Wrestling Tourney set for South Adams puts the Jets' ledger at 20-6 for the season.
Walburn had an early takedown against Nick Reel of Warren at 126. Reel escaped in period one. Walburn failed to get away in period two. In period three the two wrestlers exchanged reversals, then Reel scored a final reversal for the 5-4 win.
Walburn, rated No. 9 at 126, went 4-1 and took two more forfeits. "Walburn has seen a lot of forfeits this year. He needs matches like that one against strong opponents," said Schultz.
Pfister, ranked No. 3 at 182, lost 6-4 in overtime to Katrell Moss of Warren. Pfister led 4-2 going into the final period, then yielded an escape and a penalty point, which Schultz wasn't real keen on.
"I didn't like the penalty point, and the takedown in overtime was at the edge of the mat," said Schultz.
Ellinger defeated Warren's Corey Graham, 6-4, with on overtime takedown at 138. Liter pinned Tre'Mayne Robinson in 4:13.
Barry McGinley, rated No. 8 at 132, pinned AC sophomore Hunter Bates to put Roncalli up 37-24 with three matches to go. Ellinger won a 6-0 decision at 138 over Denny Marshal. Zac Yoder topped Jake Mappas 3-1 at 145. Liter pinned Austin McKean in 2:46, but it wasn't enough.
Call and Pfister took forfeits for AC in that meet. Joe Fuelling needed 43 seconds to fell Sam Schwab at heavyweight and Walburn took one of his forfeits.
In the win over Carmel, the Jets jumped out 24-0. Pfister took a forfeit and Alex Bollenbacher followed with a 1:45 six-pointer over Simon Perchase. Isaiah Bollenbacher took six points at 220 and Fuelling needed 40 seconds to down DeShawn Williams.
