Jets blast Raiders in ACAC first round

MONROEVILLE—The ACAC co-champion Lady Jets moved on as predicted against a struggling Southern Wells squad in two, but the South Adams Lady Stars nearly pulled off the unlikely upset against the Leo Lions losing in three sets to the other co-champs.

In the Adams Central contest, there was not much to make the trip for it seemed. In a match that lasted 25 minutes, the Lady Jets took care of business sweeping the Raiders in two games 25-8, 25-7 as if it were a tune up game for Woodlan against Thursday, which it turned out to be with the Warriors advancing to Thursday’s semi-finals as well with a win past Heritage.

“They had fun tonight and we played as a team,” AC coach Ashley Beard noted after the contest. “Our game was on tonight.”

The Lady Jets entered the contest with a renewed sense of focus after South Adams took them to a five-set decision in last Thursday’s match at the Stardome.

“They (SA) played a heck of a game against us and we knew we had to work harder after that,” Beard analyzed. “Since then we’ve had some good practices. It was all about getting us back to where we were for tonight. We did not back down at all in tonight’s match and that was our goal.”

In the first set, AC leapt out to a 5-0 start before SW got on the board with a Jet missed serve. After a few exchanges of serve, the Jets made another stretch of points jumping out to a 13-4 edge, then 17-4. Soon the Jets were up 21-7 leaving the Raiders lost on their service return. AC would nab four of the final five points to seal the first set.

The second set did not change tempo in the least for Adams Central as they kept their foot on the accelerator. Despite Southern Wells earning the first point (their only lead of the match), the Jets would get the next five to go back up 5-1. Outscoring the Raiders 20-6 the rest of the way, AC traded four points for every one of SW’s earning a lopsided 25-7 decision sealing the match.

Haley Gross led the attack with seven kills, a block and four assisted swats at the net. Whitney Peterson chimed in with six kills and a block, Madi Schwartz had three assisted blocks and 18 assisted kills, Bess Fiechter had four kills and a block, and Jenny Schultz had two digs and five aces.
