Jay County's 'Bigs' too much for AC to handle

MONROE — Adams Central’s Lady Jets took the fight to a superior Jay County team, but couldn’t take the fight out of the Lady Patriots in this year’s ACAC tourney opener in The Hangar on Tuesday.
The result was a far-improved performance— a 48-38 loss — over the first game the schools played on December 10: a 76-33 JC wipeout.
The Lady Jets were the better unit in the first quarter (trailing only 4-0 before taking a 16-13 lead at two seconds on a three by Alivia Dalrymple) and they stayed right with Jay County through the next two periods (down just five points at halftime and six after three stanzas), then chopped the JC lead to a mere two points (36-34) on Dalrymple’s fourth trey at 2:50 of the fourth quarter.
However, Jay’s size (three six-footers) and defensive pressure took their toll down the stretch in a 12-4 closing run that put the visitors at 14-2, while dipping Central to 8-9.
Dalrymple, a senior who missed a number of games at the start of the season due to a hand injury, topped AC with 14 points on four of seven three-point accuracy (one of them an NBA-level shot that was net-only), while fellow 12th grader Kylee Roe contributed 13, including six-of-six deuces with spin moves under the goal and the only free throw of the game for AC.
Jay County junior Renna Schwieterman, at six feet, bagged 21 for game honors: four twos, two for five in threes, and seven of 11 at the foul line.
While AC had a five to four edge in made threes, the free throw differential was almost identical to the spread of the final score, with the Lady Patriots having a nine-point lead: 10 for 15 versus Roe’s one for two. AC head coach Doug Curtis was pretty peeved at the refs in the late fourth quarter that his team had seven fouls, while Jay County had none.
Final stats for Jay County were unavailable, but AC’s statkeepers announced these numbers:
—Rebounds, 18, with Roe and Athena Schwartz getting five each and Dalrymple and Biberstine three apiece.
—Assists, 13, with Biberstine at four and Garwood and Schwartz three each.
—Steals, six or seven, with Schwartz gaining four.
—Turnovers, 14.
In game action, AC tied the contest at four with a Biberstine bucket, then the Lady Jets stayed ahead (once leading 13-6) until Jay County made a 7-0 run to knot the score at 13. In that run, Schwieterman had five points on two layups and a FT (with a steal leading to the second score) and Sophie Saxman also laying one in.
However, Dalrymple’s closing triple put the home side on top, 16-13.
Following a 16-16 score to open the second period, the Lady Patriots seized the lead for good with two free tosses by Madison Dirksen.
In the third quarter, Dalrymple nailed a close-in runner to make it 27-23, JC’s Isabel Rodgers knifed a three, then Dalrymple made a nifty pass to Garwood for a layup to keep AC hanging around at 30-25.
The Lady Jets made their final offensive comeback with three threes in about 80 seconds: two by Dalrymple and one by Garwood to convert a 36-25 deficit to a 36-34 nailbiter, but Jay County answered with four Schwieterman FTs to end the third period up 40-34.
In the fourth stanza, AC coach Doug Curtis tried a stall technique after the lead grew to 43-34 on a Rodgers three. For more than two minutes, Biberstine held the ball at her waist near midcourt, while nobody moved and the Jay County fans got restive and began clapping in opposition.
Finally, with Curtis yelling, “Wild card! Wild card!”, the Lady Jets began playing again, getting a Roe layup for a 43-36 margin.
Down the stretch, Schwieterman had her final four points and Rodgers added a free toss, while AC got only a layup by Roe.
After Curtis told the referees about the glaring second-half foul difference, a foul was called on JC at 35.7 seconds, but Dalrymple missed both shots.
