Fred Pickford

    Fred Pickford, 85, of Navarre, Florida, passed away on Sunday evening, April 17, 2011, in Florida.
    He was born on January 11, 1926, in Decatur to Fred A. and Lavina Pickford.
    Fred became a successful small business owner and an accomplished building contractor.
    He and his wife, Patsy, moved to Navarre in 1985, where be built their home.
    They also opened an interior decorating business in Navarre.
    Upon retirement, Fred was able to spend more time playing golf, which he thoroughly enjoyed.
    Fred joined the United States Navy on October 22, 1943, in Indianapolis and served during World War II in the South Pacific Theater of war, where he participated in seven major operations and was awarded seven bronze battle stars. He retired from the Navy after 20 years of service, with the rank of chief boatswain's mate.
    Fred's affection for his dogs was well known; he had several different beloved pets throughout his lifetime.
    He is survived by his wife, Patsy; one brother, Donald Pickford (and wife Shirley) of Decatur; one daughter, Mrs. Dick (Donna) Gapen of Atlanta, Georgia; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Gary (Kathy) Coburn of Paducah, Kentucky; Mrs. John (Pam) Arnold of Austin, Texas; and Mrs. Allen (Jill) Van Winden of Paducah; one granddaughter, Mrs. Jon (Lorrie) Edwards of Suwanee, Georgia; two great-grandchildren, Matthew and Madelyn Edwards of Suwanee; seven stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
    Fred was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, two sisters, and one grandson.
    A memorial service was conducted in Lewis Funeral Chapel at Navarre on April 21.
    A ceremony with full military honors will be held at a future date in Barrancas National Cemetery of Pensacola, Florida.
