BHS hosts Jamboree; Squaws win a pair

Bellmont soccer hosted a total of nine teams on Saturday for their annual Soccer Jamboree including squads from Leo, New Haven, South Adams, and Woodlan.
"It was a beautiful Saturday morning for the event," BHS girls coach Steve Lee noted afterwards.  "We were pleased with athletic department staff as it was very organized and it helped make this a great start for soccer season."
Teams in attendance battled out all day long with each match taking on a two 20-minute session format to speed up the event.
The Bellmont girls competed in the first scrimmage against Woodlan, then a second against South Adams. Bellmont won a stingy defensive game against the Lady Warriors, 1-0.
The Squaws kept the ball on the offensive pitch most of the day by playing good possession soccer. The one goal of the match came from a set piece as Bailey Beery took a corner kick to the near post and Hannah Wellman put the ball in the back of the net.
"We had many opportunities to score but we just struggled a little with finishing," noted Lee on his girls' performance in the first match. "It can be difficult to get in sync in a 20 minute span."
The second scrimmage against South Adams saw the Squaws in much better sync offensively in a 3-0 rout of the Lady Stars. Bellmont managed to find the back of the net three times from three different players.
Early in the offense, what Bellmont assumed was an early score at the time quickly was deleted as Madison Gephart was called offsides on a breakaway goal.
"At the time it was a call that we thought may be incorrect but after watching the tape, Maddie was inches offsides," analyzed coach Lee.
Beery had started the offensive attack shortly after the whistle with a long shot from about 20 yards out and Alaina Johnston misplayed the ball for SA at the net. Madison Gephart took advantage aggressively and crashed the goal putting a score into the back of the net but the goal was called back.
Shortly after, Bellmont would make up for the missed opportunity when Beery gave Bellmont another chance with a give and go from Alyssa Strickler putting her in approximately the same spot as her last shot. Beery ricocheted the blast off the cross bar and into the back of the net.
