11-year-old Adams County boy dies in apparent accidental shooting

An 11-year-old Adams County boy was killed Wednesday from an apparent accidental shooting, according to a news release from Adams County Sheriff Dan Mawhorr.

Police were dispatched at 3:39 p.m. Wednesday to an unknown injury at 2749E C.R. 800S. When police arrived, they discovered the child had been shot, and paramedics on-scene confirmed the boy was deceased, according to the release. The child was reportedly accidentally shot by a minor sibling.

Due to the involvement of juveniles, the identity of the victim and those involved has not yet been released. The name of the victim will be released at a later date by Adams County Coroner Leslie Cook.

Once the investigation is complete, the case will be turned over to the Adams County Prosecutors office to determine if criminal charges will be filed.

“This is another example of why all firearms must be locked up or secured when small children live in the home,” said Mawhorr.

The Berne Police Department, Geneva Town Marshal, Adams County EMS and Indiana Department of Children Services assisted in this investigation.
