Sheriff’s deputies investigated a fatal accident at 7:29 a.m. Thursday.
Deputies responded to the area of S.R. 124 and C.R. 200E in reference to a vehicle crash involving injuries, according to information from Adams County Sheriff Dan Mawhorr Thursday afternoon. During the course of the investigation, it was determined a semi-tractor, operated by Jerry W. Augler, age and address unavailable, was westbound on S.R. 124, as a multi-passenger van, operated by Elizabeth A. Poling, age and address unavailable, was eastbound and attempting to turn north into a private drive.
Reports from the sheriff’s department stated that due to foggy conditions and failure to yield the right-of-way, the semi-tractor collided with the van. Both vehicles came to rest in a ditch located on the north side of S.R. 124.
Four passengers in the van were transported to Adams Memorial Hospital with multiple injuries. A 10-year-old passenger in the van, Susan E. Schwartz, Decatur, was killed as a result of her injuries (see obituary, this page).
Adams County Sheriff’s deputies, with the assistance of the Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, are investigating the crash. The Monroe Fire Department, Adams Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Services and the Indiana State Police assisted at the scene.
The reports stated it was determined that passenger restraints were not being used by the passengers in the backseat of the van. According to reports released by the sheriff’s office, it is believed if the seatbelts had been used by the passengers, their injuries could have been less severe.
This incident remains under investigation.
