FORT WAYNE— The Bellmont Braves opened their 2014 campaign with a 4-2 victory over the South Side Archers at Elmhurst Field on Tuesday night using a three-run sixth inning to boost the win.
Braves' hurler Mason Shinabery had nine strikeouts in the win going five quality innings, while reliever Ryan Okoniewski aided the rest of the way on the hill for the Braves with the two-inning save.
The Braves struck first in the opening frame with a run but the Archers tied the game up at 1-1 in the bottom of the third. The teams would remain scoreless until the top of the sixth when the Braves tacked three runs on the board. Despite getting one back in the bottom half of the inning, Bellmont held firm in the seventh to pick up their first win of the season.
Jake Hall, Kyle Wittwer and Parker Zeser were responsible for six of the nine Bellmont hits nabbing two each on the day. Okoniewski used the bat as well leading the Braves with a pair of RBIs, while Adam Weaver also registered one.
Bellmont travels to Bluffton tonight starting at approximately 5 p.m. as the Squaws open their season as well on the softball diamond also against the Tigers.
