BERNE— The Lady Starfires started out their 2013-14 basketball campaign Saturday night at home against the Blackford Bruins coming away with an exciting overtime win, 54-47.
A night after the Berne boys lost the regional title at home, the Lady Stars treated the South Adams faithful with a gem of a contest that saw SA take an 11-5 lead after one quarter.
It was a much closer contest at halftime at 20-18 as the Bruins closed the gap and then the Stars pushed 13 points across in the third frame to lead 33-29 heading into the fourth.
Blackford did just enough to force an extra period outscoring the Stars 16-12 making it 45-45 at the end of regulation. The Bruins could muster only two points in the extra frame, however as the Starfires pulled away late with the seven points win.
Sydney Willis led the Starfires with 17 points in her first game of varsity basketball nailing three triples and going 8-13 at the foul line. Alyssa Bluhm was the only other SA shooter with double digits nabbing 13 points, five from the foul line.
Other SA scorers included Dzejna Ahmetovic with eight points in her first game back since season-ending knee surgery last spring. Forward Sharon Balsiger also had eight points, while Mackenzie Jennings had six points and Maddie Morgan had two free throws.
For Blackford, Lauren Godfrey led all scores with 25 points including six three-pointers but other than Maggie Weeks-Foy who had 14, no other Bruin scored more than three points.
The Starfires play at Eastbrook on Thursday starting with the JV contest at 6 p.m.
