The Braves struck early and often in their first round sectional game against Norwell Wednesday night at home using an explosive offensive attack to score a win, 5-0.
The win over their NHC rivals launches Bellmont into the sectional championship Friday against South Side who defeated Wayne in the second game on Wednesday night.
Bellmont was the consistent aggressor in this match-up against the team that handed the Braves their first loss of the season on September 3. They gave the Norwell defense fits as they tried to contest the speed of seniors Cameron Bienz and Connor Martz as well as freshman Joel Harvey.
Sam Ainsworth, who had a very productive night for the Braves, put the home team up 1-0 at the 30:51 mark with a header on a corner kick from the foot of Harvey. Ainsworth also contributed with a later assist to Nevin Miller.
The early goal set the tone for the rest of the match as Bellmont refused to ease up on the gas and continued to pressure the Knights’ defense with fluent ball movement, quick breaks to the goal and a plethora of corner kicks.
“We saw what they were giving us,” analyzed Bellmont coach Jake Briede, “so we took advantage.”
Bienz got his lone goal of the night off a chaotic corner kick in which the ball hopped around in the box. Bienz eventually was able to get a foot on it and see it to the back of the net. With a little over a minute remaining the half, Bienz received another good look at the ball off a scramble but was called offside, negating the goal.
