MONROE — For the second consecutive season, Adams Central has cleared the field during the ACAC schedule and earned the conference crown thanks to a three-set sweep of the South Adams Starfires at home on Senior Night 25-19, 25-16, 25-18.
"I think we were more excited about Senior Night and winning it for the girls but going 7-0 in the conference is something we are very excited about," smiled Ashley Beard, the AC coach.
The victory, like many of the others in the conference for AC, did not come easy as the Lady Stars entered the Hangar ready to play spoiler.
"We practiced against a make-believe Adams Central all week," explained SA coach Amie Sprunger. "We knew what they were going to try and do with their hitters. The girls listened and adjusted very nicely and we gave them a good run."
In all three sets, the Starfires held a lead of at least three points in the early going catching the Lady Jets off-balance on more than one occasion. In the opening stanza, The Jets and Stars were tied at 3-3, then SA blasted six straight points to lead 9-3 led by three straight aces from libero Lauren Smith.
Adams Central would respond, however, nabbing four straight points of their own to make it 9-7. After a Starfire point, Haley Gross would smash a point for the Jets, then Anna Burkhart would tie the game with an ace to make it 10-10. A few plays later, Whitney Peterson and Gross would go back-to-back blocks for points and the Jets rolled to a 15-10 advantage that the Stars did not recover from.
The Lady Jets led by as many as eight points at 21-13 but the Stars made it interesting down the stretch when Alyssa Bluhm recorded two kills in a row to make it 24-19. Senior Abby Snyder put away the final kill on the next play, however, giving AC the one-set lead.
