The North Adams school board on Tuesday evening approved a contract with the North Adams Teachers Association for 2013-14. The contract contains language that implements a state-mandated method of evaluating teachers and subsequently determining a rate of increase in salaries.
By law, teachers must be included in the process of drawing up the evaluation guidelines, and a vote of the teaching staff was necessary for the implementation of those rules that set guidelines for awarding raises — also known as "merit pay" — to teachers and principals who are rated "highly effective" or "effective," the highest of four possible evaluation classifications..
The rate of the raise is determined based on units earned through evaluations.
