Alvin G. Schell, 69, a resident of Berne, passed away on Saturday at Swiss Village Retirement Community, following an extended illness. Alvin was a former resident of Portland and Geneva.
Alvin was born on June 27, 1941, in Mercer County, Ohio, the son of Harry A. and Grace (Manor) Schell.
He was a 1959 graduate of Madison Township High School in Jay County.
He worked for Union City Body Company for 30 years, retiring in 1991. He also was self-employed in the craft business with his wife Darlean for several years.
He attended First Missionary Church in Berne.
Alvin married Marlene Clifton on August 5, 1962, and she passed away on April 7, 1989. He then married Darlean Deaton on December 1, 1989.
Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Darlean Schell; two daughters, Yvonne R. Hime and Karen D. Ferner (husband Mark), both of rural Portland; one son, Brad G. Schell (wife Cathy) of Decatur; two stepdaughters, Deanna K. Bechtol of Celina, Ohio, and Larisa K. Sudhoff (husband Dan) of Ossian; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation for Alvin Schell will be held today from 4-8 p.m. in the Portland chapel of Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home.
Funeral services for Alvin Schell will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Portland chapel of Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home. Pastor Kurt Richie will officiate.
Burial will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery at Fort Recovery, Ohio.
Memorials may be directed toward The Gideons International or to Hope Care Center of Decatur. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
