Rising fuel costs and federal cutbacks are making it increasingly difficult for Sharon Tester to keep Adams County's senior transportation program afloat.
Because of those financial hardships, Tester, director of the Adams County Council on Aging, made a request to Berne City Council on Monday evening for a slight increase in the city's annual contribution to support of the agency's program that assists senior citizens and disabled individuals throughout the county.
For the past several years, the city of Berne has chipped in with $3,000 annually to help fund the transportation program. This time around, Tester asked for a $3,200 stipend, and the council quickly agreed.
Tester said some 43 senior citizens and/or handicapped individuals from the Berne area made approximately 1,000 trips to or from Berne in the past year, with the overwhelming majority of those trips directly related to medical services.
