Qualifying industries looking to locate or expand in Berne will now have the opportunity to earn 100 percent freedom from all real and personal property tax liability for up to five years for such projects.
Berne on Tuesday evening became the first community in Adams County to put in place a so-called "super abatement" phase-in policy to reward firms who make a substantial investment in the community. Berne City Council voted 5-0 to approve the policy that grants seven- and 10-year super abatements which include up to five years of tax-free status.
The Indiana General Assembly a few years ago approved legislation that allows communities to grant up to 100 percent tax abatements for a maximum of 10 years.
