National Weather Service officials this morning informed officials at the Decatur weather station that the St. Marys River is expected to crest around 20.6 feet here tonight.
Although the river's flood stage is 17 feet, it causes no significant problems until getting beyond 21 feet.
Weather station officials said today the city received another 4-10ths of an inch of rain after 7 a.m. Thursday, after a 2.79-inch rainfall in the previous 24 hours. The Wednesday downpour boosted the St. Marys from 4.06 feet Wednesday morning to 17.67 feet in the next 24 hours, then 20.38 feet at 7 a.m. today.
The weather bureau said there is a 20 percent chance of rain in the Decatur area today and none is expected Saturday and Sunday.
