YORKTOWN — Adams Central coach Doug Schultz calls his team's performance Saturday at Yorktown "mediocre" as the Jets went 3-2, losing in the battle of No.1s to the hosts, 58-16, then falling to New Haven and former AC coach Barry Humble, 39-27.
The Jets took second in their pool, slamming Prairie Heights 68-6 and Maconaquah 69-12, and also downing Culver Community 46-25.
The worse day of the season so far puts the Jets at 12-3 going into Tuesday's intra-county battle with Bellmont at the Teepee.
"We pretty much got steamrolled by Yorktown. They were big, physical and we didn't match up with them very well," admitted Schultz.
"Against New Haven in the cross-pool match, we held out a couple of guys who got banged up against Yorktown, and that certainly didn't help us," explained Schultz.
The Jets in Class A and Yorktown in 2A have been rated No. 1 all season long. Both will be at Westfield High School this coming Saturday in the first Indiana Wrestling Coaches Association State Team Tournament.
Elkhart Memorial defeated Yorktown in the title match Saturday.
Sophomore Andy Oliver injured his neck against Yorktown in the 113-pound match. Senior Alex Bollenbacher injured ribs in the 182-pound match. Both are questionable for Tuesday's battle at Bellmont.
"Our kids are used to being the aggressors, then we run into Yorktown kids and they took the match to us. We were a bit slow on countering a few times and it cost us," said Schultz.
Ben Pfister scored a 12-2 major win over John Wales of Yorktown and senior Cody Walburn pinned Logan Campbell at 126 in 1:12. Joe Fuelling took a forfeit at heavyweight. The Jets yielded eight falls to the Yorkies, including a 4:55 pin by Konner Campbell over Oliver.
Walburn emerged from the day at 15-0, while Pfister took his first loss in 15 matches, falling to highly-rated Matt Hurford of Culver, 14-8. "Ben gave up a couple of quick takedowns and trailed 8-2 early. After the first 90 seconds, he wrestled him pretty well," pointed out Schultz.
