MONROE—The Leo Lions gave the #1-ranked Adams Central Jets a rude awakening at the Hangar on Thursday night stunning the home team 34-32 in an ACAC mat dual.
As the top-ranked team in the small school division entering their season opener, AC looked the part after a quick pin to start from senior Ben Pfister at 195.
AC's 6-0 lead would be their last, however.
Isiah Bollenbacher fell to Nolan Wilson tying the match up at 6-6, then junior fan-favorite, Joe Fuelling lost at heavyweight by decision, 5-2, putting Leo on top for good at 9-6.
"We had a few matches get away from us," explained AC coach Doug Schultz who had reprimanded his team all week about the unimportance of their pre-season ranking.
Things went from bad to worse for AC as Leo put some distance between them on the scoreboard with freshman Tucker Miller's loss by pin at 106, then Adam Cook's loss by decision at 120 to a talented Leo junior, Ryan Fawcett.
Leo led by just four points after senior Cody Walburn won by tech fall at 126 making the score 18-14, but then the turning point was Josh Schwartz' loss to sophomore Nick Mahasena at 132. Schwartz was pinned in the third round after controlling most of the match.
"Cook wrestled the kid at 120 real well, then Schwartz' match at 132 was one we just couldn't afford to lose," noted coach Schultz. "Our conditioning wasn't there tonight either."
The Jets pulled within one point at 24-23 when Zac Yoder defeated Ernie Sandoval at 145 by decision (6-2) and it looked as though Adams Central may pull off the comeback until another upset at 152 occurred with Aaron Eicher beating Luke Liter by major decision (13-2).
