Friday is the deadline to apply for either of two vacancies on the seven-member South Adams School Board.
Interested applicants should mail a cover letter and resume to Arlene Amstutz, Board President, 1075 Starfire Way, Berne, IN, 46711. Candidates must live within the city limits of Berne at least one year before November 6 and be at least 21 years of age.
Both openings are in District 3 and the selected candidates will serve two years, January of 2013 through December of 2014..
The first vacancy occurred on November 6 when Tony Mellencamp was elected to the Adams County Council. Mellencamp will step down from the school board at the end of the year.
The second opening also occurred on November 6, although it wasn't immediately confirmed, when Amy Orr was elected to an at-large seat on the board. Orr currently serves as a member from District 3, but reportedly will be moving out of the district.
Orr was a three-vote victor over Gresham (Bud) Bearrs, 1,193 to 1,189, and her victory wasn't solidified until provisional ballots were counted on November 16.
She takes the at-large seat currently held by Steve Dobler, who did not seek a new term.
Other members of the board are Amstutz, John Mann, Julie Mansfield and John Buckingham.
