Robert F. Thomas Sr., 94, of Fort Wayne, passed away Saturday, May 19, 2012, at Heritage Park Health Care Center.
Born in Antwerp, Ohio, he graduated from North Side High School in 1936, where he enjoyed track and cross country, and still holds the state record in the 1.5-mile race.
Robert was a U.S. Navy veteran during World War Two. He worked for the railroad for a few years then as a custodian with Peoples Trust Bank. He also did maintenance for May Stone and Gravel. He attended First Assembly of God and was a member of Garrett American Legion Post 178. He was one of the original mall walkers at Glenbrook Square, beginning over 40 years ago.
He is survived by his wife, Monabelle M. Thomas of Fort Wayne; son, Robert F. (Kay) Thomas, Jr. of Decatur; daughter, Marlene R. (Thomas) Kelleher of Waterloo; granddaughter, Marlo (Dyron) Williams of Geneva; grandson, Mitch Bye of Bozeman, Mont.; great-granddaughters, Brittany Bascom of Lexington, Ky., and Mackenzie Williams of Genvea, Ill.; and niece, Anita Jacobs of Fort Wayne.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Una Thomas; grandson, Christopher Alan Bye; brothers, George and Frank Thomas; and sister, Helen Jacob.
Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 24, at D.O. McComb and Sons Pine Valley Park Funeral Home, 1320 East Dupont Road, with calling from 2-4 p.m. The Rev. Frank Sitcler will be officiating.
Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Preferred memorials are to the Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana.
