James B. Roop, 83, of Decatur, and a past resident of Naples, Fla., for 21 years, passed away on Friday, January 27, 2012, in the Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home located in Fort Wayne.
He was born on Monday, April 30, 1928, in Decatur, the son of the late Ralph J. Roop and the late Etheldreda (Parent) Roop.
He married Marilyn G. Teeple on April 26, 1952, in Decatur.
He served his country in the United States Marines during the Korean Conflict from 1947 to 1953 and was a Purple Heart recipient.
James was a member of the St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Decatur, and a previous member of St. Elizabeth Seton Church and the Knights of Columbus in Golden Gate, Fla.
He retired in 1994 from St. Vincent DePaul in Naples, Fla. Previously he served as the Adams County Highway Superintendant for three years, owned Alpine Acres for 12 years, and was a salesman for Gerber Products Company for 15 years.
Surviving are his wife, Marilyn G. Roop, of Decatur; two sons, Stephen J. (Brenda) Roop, of Naples, Fla.; and Richard A. (Cindy) Roop of Gravette, Ark.; two daughters, Patricia A. (Martin) Fuelling, of Decatur; and Nancy A. (Rex) Evans, of Decatur; 11 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brother, William Roop, and his sister, Alice J. Schooler..
Friends will be received from 2-4 and 5-8 p.m., Monday, January 30, in Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home.
A prayer service will be held at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, January 31, in Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, with Msgr. William Schooler officiating.
Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Decatur.
