Marcella B. Merica, 91, formerly of Decatur, passed away at 8:10 a.m. on Monday, January 23, 2012, at Bethlehem Woods Nursing Home, Fort Wayne.
She was born on February 16, 1920, in Warsaw, to the late Devon and Gladys (Dick) Emmons.
She married George E. Smith, who passed away in September, 1963. She then married Lester A. Mercia, who passed away in October, 1992.
Marcella was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Decatur, where she had been involved with Jail Ministry and the Alter Guild. In 1998, she was awarded the Channel 15 TV Golden Rule Award for people who care, with the work she had done with the Jail Ministry. She was a graduate of Warsaw High School, Class of 1938.
Marcella had worked for Patterson–Fletcher clothing store in FortWayne; the Peabody Home, in North Manchester, Indiana, being one of the first “Peabody Girls,” and the Pierceton Lumber Company.
Survivors include her daughter, Anita K. Wolfe, of Fort Wayne; sons, James W. (Barb) and David J. (Rose) Smith, both of Fort Wayne; brother, Robert J. "Bill" (Edna) Emmons, of Huntington; 13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Devon "Buck" Emmons Jr.; and two sisters, Ignota Smith and Marjorie Hubarrt.
Visitation will be from 4–8 p.m.,Wednesday, January 25, at the Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, January 26, at the First United Methodist Church, Decatur.
Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Pierceton, Indiana.
