LEO-CEDARVILLE — Adams Central heavyweight Joe Fuelling fought for some leverage then chucked the bigger Bryce Hager to the mat twice in the final minute for a 9-6 win Wednesday, igniting a seven-match win skein as the Jets dumped ACAC rival Leo 56-21.
The win put the Jets clearly in control of the ACAC regular-season race with a 5-0 mark. A victory tonight over Heritage would clinch the crown for the Jets, now 19-2 overall.
Fuelling fell behind early and Hager put him on his back twice, but just out of bounds. A late switch in period one tied the match at 2-all, and the AC junior trailed again 5-4 midway through the final period before taking charge.
"Joe kept letting that kid jack him up and I thought for sure he was going to get tripped to his back. Finally he got a little underhook and just slid the kid over the top of him, which is what we were screaming for him to do the whole time," said AC coach Doug Schultz. "Joe's a gamer. He never gives up," praised Schultz.
Fuelling's grasp of victory from the jaws of defeat stopped a 12-point run for the Lions and tied the meet at 21 apiece. Andy Oliver then dominated Leo's Eddie Loraine in a 17-1 tech fall at 106, and Adam Cook followed with a 1:00 toss and pin of Michael Bougher.
Cody Walburn at 120 and Derek Ellinger took forfeits, then senior Derek Roe pinned A.J. Saylor of Leo in 1:45. Luke Liter stacked Brayton Pier in just 16 seconds to end the meet, which lasted only 50 minutes.
"If we can get the win over Heritage, we can close the door on the conference thing," said Schultz of the likely win tonight in the wrestling gym.
The Jets also got a fall from junior Ben Pfister, now rated No. 14 in the state at 1882 pounds. Pfsiter headlocked Leo's David Hepler for a 3:42 six-pointer.
The Jets will host their annual Jets Super Dual on Saturday with Snider, Bishop Dwenger, Northrop, Jay County, Bluffton, Southwood and newcomer Brownsburg joining the hosts for action.
The contest between the Jets and the Bluffton squad on Saturday will count as the ACAC regular-season dual.
