Three quick pops in succession from behind the arc by the Garrett Railroaders spelled defeat for the Bellmont boys basketball team Wednesday night at the Teepee as the Braves fell by a final 62-58 count.
The Braves had broken a 28-28 tie at halftime (and that was after they trailed by seven in the second period) to go up 34-30 in the third period on a Matt Chronister basket. The next time they looked up, the Braves found themselves trailing 39-34 as Drake Landes had hit a pair of treys and Brandon Porter had one before Bellmont coach John Baker called a timeout.
"That was a huge turnaround," admitted Baker after the game as the Railroaders took advantage of defensive lapses when Bellmont didn't do a good job of containing the dribble drive to the basket.
Porter was a beneficiary of the Bellmont defense and Baker said "number 20 (Porter) opened things wide open by going to the basket. When we got behind late it was a case where we just couldn't trade basket for basket anymore, we needed to make a stop and Garrett made some big shots."
