Workers from several companies are on the job this week redoing the busy railroad crossing on five-lane 13th St.
The southbound lanes have been in bad shape for years, and two or three repair jobs have failed to hold. This time, the entire crossing will be replaced, with the project hopefully completed by Friday.
In accompanying photo, a worker operates a hydraulic lift pulled up a heavy cover from part of the crossing so workers could reach the rails beneath. The cover was put on a forklift.
Some 2,000 tractor-trailer trucks pass through Decatur every weekday, most of them on US 27 at this location.
