The Decatur Thunderbirds played in the second annual Don Osborn Willshire 10 and Under tournament this past weekend and swept all five games they played for the championship title.
In pool play games, the T-Birds blanked Patrick Henry of Ohio 9-0 on Friday, and on Saturday knocked off Rockford, Ohio 7-5 and Van Wert, Ohio 18-0. In the elimination round Saturday, Decatur fashioned a big 19-1 triumph over Van Wert and then whipped Patrick Henry again by a 12-2 count in the championship encounter.
The Thunderbirds tallied 65 runs in 21 innings in the tournament while blasting 60 hits. Their pitching was equally tough allowing only eight runs in 24 innings by their foes and they struck out 51 while issuing only 13 free passes. Cam Voglewede and Corey Miller both won two games while Kevin Brown picked up one victory. Brevin Slusher had two saves, Nick Teeple had two saves, and Noah Macklin earned one save.
Hitting stats for the Thunderbirds found Brown with eight hits including two doubles and two triples, Ethan Corral with seven hits including two triples, Payton Boyd with seven hits, Teeple with five hits, Voglewede with six hits including a triple and two ground-rule doubles, Slusher belted 10 hits with a double, Macklin doubled and tripled among his four hits, Jon Ruble stroked two doubled among five hits, Colin Mills had two hits, Miller belted five hits including two doubles and Aaron Lehrman had one hit.
Boyd and Voglewede were selected to the All-Tourney team.
The Thunderbirds are now 16-1 in the three tournaments they have played in this summer and will be back in action this coming weekend at Van Wert in the Don Bachman Classic.
