Dirty Birds picked up two wins on Sunday in the Fort Wayne Red Carrington league play, downing the Fort Wayne Orioles 5-1 in the first game Sunday before totally destroying the Orioles 19-2 in the nightcap, in Stan Musial AABC action.
The Birds started off with Corey Schwartz return to the mound after a short layoff between the college season and his summer play. He started off shaky by his standards, hitting a batter and walking two before allowing a run on a wild pitch. But, he rounded into form nicely for the next 5 innings throwing 95 pitches in 6 innings, striking out 6 while allowing two hits and walking 4, yielding one run.
Josh Shatto rang up one hitter in a scoreless inning of relief. Offensively, the Birds were led by Zac Pfafmans 2-for-3 performance. Nate Kipfer tripled as did Bryan Brudi. Travis Case doubled and singled while Ignatius Mackenzie doubled for the victors.
Game two the Birds onslaught wouldn't be stopped as they scored in every inning of the 5 inning game, plating no less than two runs per inning. Bryan Brudi went 3-for-5 on the day, Nate Kipfer added a double and a single, Austin Grate tripled and doubled, while Jake Owens went 4-for-4 with two doubles.
Travis Case hit a grand slam to go with a single, while Corey Oetting doubled twice. Brian Tarnowski and Zac Pfafman also singled. Ian Clay was credited with the win, going 3 innings before giving way to Cody Jones who gave up a run while striking out 3.
In the season opener on Friday night, Tarnowski tossed a no-hitter for the Dirty Birds in a 10-0 win over the Fort Wayne Red Sox. Tarnowski struck out 12 and allowed three baserunners, two on walks, in hurling the gem.
