HUNTINGTON—The Bellmont boys golf team played well enough Saturday to see another day as they finished third out of 12 teams in the IHSAA golf sectional at the LaFontaine Golf Course and will advance to the regional on Thursday to be held at The Player's Club Golf Course in Muncie at 8 a.m.
Norwell easily won the competition with just 301 strokes while the host Huntington North Vikings moved on with a second place score of 321. Bellmont claimed the third spot at 331 beating out Eastbrook at 338. Other team scores included Marion 343, Mississinewa 345, Madison-Grant 347, Blackford 357, Bluffton 369, South Adams 371, Southern Wells 396, and Adams Central 419.
Zach Wetzel fired three birdies in his 18-hole round of 77. He posted birdies on the par-five sixth and 16th holes and on the par-four 13th. Nathan Kortenber was right behind Wetzel at 78 and he birdied a pair of holes on the back nine on the par-four 10th and par-five 12th.
Had Bellmont not advanced as a team, both rounds posted by Wetzel and Kortenber would have been good enough for them to move on as individuals at the regional.
Other Bellmont shooters included Chase Ellsworth 86, Connor Busick 90, and Cory Coshow 102. Busick started off with a birdie on the par-four first hole,
Medalist honors for the day went to E. J. Tackett of Huntington North who knocked two strokes off par with his round of 70. Norwell's Ross Matthews and McCormick Clouser were second and third at 71 and 74. Wetzel's round of 77 put him in a tie for fifth among all golfers on the day. Norwell's Taylor Imel started strong for the Knights with a birdie on the first hole and then recorded an eagle two on the second hole, a par four. He struggled later on the front nine and finished at 78.
South Adams was led by Derek Fox who finished at 89. He was followed by Mark Muselman at 92, Chase Mosser at 93 and Daniel Heckard at 97. Heckard's round included birdies on the par-four first and 15th. Zach Grabau rounded out the day for the Starfires with a 102.
Adams Central's Josh Thieme was the only Jet to break 100 with a round of 97. Other Jets included Blake Pfeiffer 102, Kyle Fourman 109, Ren Christian 111, and Nick McCullough 115.
