The effort to place new playground equipment in Legion Park — spurred by a group of women calling themselves Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) — was "quite successful" this week, Parks and Recreation Director Steve Krull said at Tuesday night's meeting of Decatur City Council.
The women raised some $50,000 to purchase the equipment, then they were joined by 40 to 50 volunteers on Monday to erect the equipment. GameTime, the company from which the equipment was purchased, sent several advisors to the park on Monday to lend technical expertise.
"Actually, it went a lot better than I had anticipated," Krull saiid. "It went wonderful, actually; very smooth." The equipment is now ready for use.
Several City of Decatur departments chipped in with the effort, as did Hitchcock Concrete Inc., and Krull noted that the GameTime representatives were impressed by the cooperation between the various departments.
A swing set hadn't arrived before Monday, along with some other minor items, but it was hoped that the arrival would come on Thursday (today) and installation could be completed by a few workers.
On Monday, West End restaurant provided lunch for nearly 50 people, The Next Page donated coffee, and Heyerly's donated ice to keep soda pop and water cold for the volunteers. The MOPS women, along with family and friends, made desserts and donated soft drinks and snacks.
Krull said it is hoped that some walkways, additional lighting and a solar-lit American flag can be added in the future.
He noted that Legion Park is the city park most used by families.
MOPS is planning a celebration / dedication at the park on Wednesday August 24, from 5 - 7 p.m., during the 175th celebration.
Donations are still being accepted for lights and benches to add in the park. Tax deductible donations may be sent to 502 W. Monroe St., Decatur, IN 46733 (Attn.: MOPS). For further information, contact Abby Dyer, 724-8794; Kara Martin, 724-9182; or Nicole Baker, 724-2802.
"This is something for the entire community to be proud of," Mayor John Schultz said.
