DEFIANCE, Oh — Senior second baseman Ian Sanders (Decatur, Ind./Bellmont H.S.) collected three hits and broke the Franklin College career record in that stat department in the second game of Saturday's Heartland Conference baseball doubleheader at Defiance.
Sanders’ RBI double to left center field in the eighth inning was the 209th hit of his career, snapping the mark held by Jim Swienconek ‘09, to help the Grizzlies (12-8 HCAC, 22-12 overall) rout the Yellow Jackets 14-2 in the second contest and complete a doubleheader and three-game series sweep of Defiance (1-19 HCAC, 5-30). FC outlasted the Jackets 8-6 in 10 innings on Friday.
Jarrett Johnson (Beech Grove, Ind./H.S.) and Scott Windler (Lafayette, Ind./Central Catholic H.S.) also collected three hits — Windler drove in two runs with a triple — and shortstop Nick Stoia (Indianapolis, Ind./Decatur Central H.S.) hit his ninth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the first inning, and had four RBIs in all.
Pitcher Shawn Mattingly (Indianapolis) pitched the first seven innings, posting seven strikeouts and improving to 4-3.
Sanders went three-for-four with two runs scored and two RBI, and was credited with four assists at second base for Franklin.
