Jerry L. Penrod, 67, of Bluffton, died at 10:15 a.m. Monday at his residence.
He was born on November 7, 1943, in Bluffton, the only child of Claude and Verda Gordon Penrod, who are deceased.
He married Joanna Jump on August 30, 1964, in Uniondale, Indiana, and she survives.
He coached boys' basketball at Southern Wells High School for 36 years: 28 years as the freshman coach, four years as the middle school coach, and four years as the varsity coach. He was the coach when the Raiders competed in the Semistate.
He taught grades seven through 12 at Southern Wells for 38 years in social studies and United States history. Even with his death, his planning was centered around educating.
He was a 1961 graduate of Rockcreek High School in Wells County, received a bachelor of science degree in 1965 from Ball State University, and received a master's degree in 1971 from Ball State.
He was a member of the Liberty Center Lions Club and the Delta Chi fraternity at Ball State.
He was a farmer and a painter.
Surviving are two sons, Gregory C. Penrod (and wife Tonya) of Warren, Indiana, and David W. Penrod (and wife Kimberly) of Bluffton; two daughters, Mrs. Keith (Kathy L.) Fiechter of rural Decatur and Mrs. Todd (Patti J.) Osborn of Poneto; one stepbrother, Kenneth Wright (and wife Pat) of Flatrock, Michigan; one stepsister, Mrs. Jay (Sharon) Crozier of Ossian; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
His stepfather, Gerald Wright, is deceased.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Goodwin Memorial Chapel at Bluffton, with Pastor Troy Drayer officiating, assisted by James Schwartzkopf and Jim Irwin.
Burial will be in Elm Grove Cemetery, Bluffton.
Visiting hours are 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, 1-8 p.m. Thursday, and 10-11 a.m. Friday.
Preferred memorials are to the Simon Center at Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis and to Family Hospice and Palliative Care of Northeast Indiana, at Berne.
