OSSIAN — A two-run double off the wall in left field by Sammie Baker broke an Adams Central scoring drought and helped propel the Jets to an 8-1 victory over Norwell Monday night at the Knights' field.
Sydnee Peterson of AC and K. Hanni of Norwell were hooked up in a pitcher's duel for the first four innings that saw Norwell clinging to a narrow 1-0 edge. The Jets then scored three runs in the fifth on three hits as Bess Fiechter led off with a single, Jenae Blackburn singled and both runners moved up on a fielder's choice by Alyssa Keller. Baker banged a Hanni fastball off the fence for a 2-1 edge, one the Jets wouldn't lose for the rest of the game and she scored later when Peterson hit into a fielder's choice.
Keller had another key role in AC's outburst in the sixth inning as she clubbed her third home run of the young season, a two-out blast that scored Fiechter. Fiechter had singled home Alexa Baller earlier in the frame after Baller doubled to led off for the Jets.
Adams Central added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh as Jenna Byer and Olivia Macklin singled and Byer scored when Lindsey McDougall reached base on a Norwell error. Ariel Shaneyfelt completed the scoring night for the Jets with a double bringing in McDougall.
"We had a hard time knocking in runs early and left a lot of runners on the bases but then we had Sammie's key double, Alyssa had another home run and Alexa's double too were big hits as were those in the seventh," noted AC coach Cary Blake.
Blake praised the pitching performance of Peterson saying "Syd pitched well. 11 K's might be her best."
Adams Central outhit Norwell 11-5 in the game and played errorless ball on defense while the Knights fumbled the ball five times. The victory hiked AC's record to 4-1 on the season. Baker, Keller and Fiechter all had two-hit games for AC and Fiechter crossed home plate twice for the Jets.
