Junior weightman Troy Tonner fired career bests to win both the shot put and discus events Tuesday, scoring the only two firsts for the Jets as they opened the 2011 boys track season with a 91-32 loss to a strong Eastbrook squad.
Tonner tossed the shot 47' 3.5" to easily win the event, and he topped his previous best by almost three feet. In the discus, his winning toss of 143'8" was over five feet better than his previous best.
The Jets lost outstanding weightman Alex Reinhard to graduation and Tonner is apparently ready to replace a lot of those points lost. The Jets also lost hurdler James Agler, 800 meter runner Tim Sipe and 400 meter standout Seth Dynes.
"All of those guys were able to score big points for us in their events. I'm looking for some good, young talent to step up and get that done," stated Central coach Michael Mosser, who was pleased with Tonner's improvement over a year ago.
"I think we'll be very competitive in many different events," added Mosser.
Mosser points out other key returnees for the Jets in distance runner Kyle Fawcett, hurdler and long jumper Shawn Reinhard and sprinter and jumper Kurt Blake.
Reinhard finished second to Benedict of Eastbrook Tuesday in a pair of close races. In the 110 highs, both were clocked at 17.4. Benedict ran a 44.3 to the 45.4 of Reinhard in the 300 sticks. A year ago, Reinhard went 16.0 in the hurdles. Tuesday's the cool temperatures and gusty winds didn't help the numbers.
Reinhard went 19'7.5 inches in the long jump to the 20'3" of Beckford of Eastbrook, taking another second place.
Fawcett, who recorded a 4:48 1600 a year ago, wasn't far off that with a 4:55 Tuesday. Neideck of Eastbrook ran a 4:45 for the win. Fawcett, a junior, also took second in the 800 with a solid 2:13.
Blake went 19' for third in the long jump, an inch better than his best of a year ago.
The Jets went 20-21-2 last year for Mosser, including a 3-3-1 mark in the ACAC. The Jets finished fourth in the ACAC Boys Track Meet and the team finished 8th out of 10 in the Wayne Sectional.
