Rev. Elbert A. Smith Jr., 87, passed away on Sunday, December 5, 2010, at Kingston Care Center in Fort Wayne.
Born in Riverhead, New York, Elbert was a pastor with First Presbyterian Church in Fort Wayne for 13 years and retired in 1997. He was also a teacher at Bellmont High School for 17 years.
He was an alumnus of Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, and of Louisville Presbyterian Seminary, where he received his master's degree.
Elbert also was an avid model train enthusiast.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Thelma Smith of Fort Wayne; sons David (Helen) Smith of Manning, South Carolina, and Jeffrey (Cathy) Smith of Apple Valley, California; daughter Peggy Jones of Pretty Lake, Indiana; sisters Bernice Smith of Austell, Georgia, and Betty Welch of Palatka, Florida; brother Robert (Patricia) Smith of Palatka; grandsons Lee, Grady, Jeremy, and Caleb Smith; granddaughters Carrie Jones and Rachel McKenna-Weaver of Fort Wayne; and five great-grandchildren.
Elbert was preceded in death by his brother, George Smith. and three great-grandsons.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in First Presbyterian Church, 300 W. Wayne St., Fort Wayne, with Dr. Ed Dykstra officiating.
Visitation is Friday from 6-8 p.m. at D.O. McComb and Sons Lakeside Park Funeral Home, 1140 Lake Ave., Fort Wayne, and 10-11 a.m. Saturday in the church.
