AMH adds new orthpaedic specialist

     A familiar name with a different face has been added to the medical staff of the Adams Memorial Hospital, according to AMH officials.
    Dr. Aaron C. Coats, brother of AMH orthopaedic surgeon Dr. David Coats, has joined the surgical staff at Adams Memorial Hospital and will specialize in orthopaedics and sports medicine.

Friends of Carnigie eye public gathering

    Adams County Historian and Librarian Louise Wolpert, representing the group Friends of the Carnegie Library, appeared before the Adams County Commissioners Monday afternoon to inform the county officials of an upcoming public meeting to save the former Carnegie Library building and invite them to attend. And she came with reinforcements.
    Friends members Betsy Dickerson and Janet Torson also appeared before the commissioners.

Demolition under way at former GE plant

     Work began this week on the demolition of the former General Electric plant in Decatur. Crews from Brandonberg Excavating are performing the work.

Andrew Luck and Reggie Wayne were back in sync for Indianapolis on Sunday. The 25-year-old quarterback threw for 393 yards and four touchdowns, while the 35-year-old Colts receiver had seven catches for a season-best 119 yards and his first TD of the season, leading the Colts to a 41-17 rout over Tennessee.

     Nicholas Do Valle Cardoso and Meagan O’Campo were crowned 2014 Homecoming king and queen Friday night at Bellmont High School during the school’s annual festivities.

 

Decatur works to protect drinking water supplies

     The city of Decatur has developed a Wellhead Protection Plan, approved by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, to help protect the underground aquifer and the water supply wells from potential contamination.

    More than 1.3 million Hoosier voters helped put Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz in office in 2012. As the only Democrat to currently hold statewide office, Ritz has had an uphill battle ever since.
    Buffeted at seemingly every turn by Republican Gov. Mike Pence and an Indiana General Assembly with GOP super-majorities in both chambers, Ritz has had her share of well-documented clashes with state leaders while attempting to carry out her mandate from the voters to improve the state of education in Indiana.

United Way kickoff luncheon held

    The annual United Way Kickoff event was held Thursday at the South Adams Senior Center in Berne, with Executive Director Mari Sanders and co-chairs Jessica Thieme and Natasha Nevil outlining the goals for the 2014 pledge drive.
    Kicking off the event was Pastor Donald Sauls of Peace Lutheran Church and Compassionate Ministries, along with Adams County residents Jaun and Lisa Martinez, who spoke of the help they have received through Compassionate Ministries.

    A quick 45-minute meeting of the Adams Health Network Board of Trustees was held Wednesday night at the Adams Evergreen facility, with yet another positive financial report for the previous month delivered.

Winchester Street site purchase for jail OK’d

    With little fanfare, Adams County Commissioners cleared a major hurdle in locating the proposed new county jail on property owned by the Miller Family Trust on the southwest side of Decatur. The commissioners on Monday approved a notice to exercise their option to purchase the 162-acre tract of land along Winchester Street.

Decatur business owner frustrated with commissioners

    Decatur City Councilman Cam Collier was in the audience during Monday’s meeting of the Adams County Commissioners, but waited until the end of the lengthy session before deciding to speak. Collier’s father, Dave, owns the Collier Insurance building on 3rd Street, which has been the subject of conversation by county officials connected with its possible purchase as a site for the planned superior court complex.
