Group rallies to save Carnegie Library building

    More than two dozen local citizens and area officials packed Monday afternoon’s weekly meeting of the Adams County Commissioners to express their desire to save the former Carnegie Library in Decatur from the possibility of demolition to make room for the construction of a new Superior Court building.

County’s jobless rate: 4.4%

    The unemployment rate in Adams County during August was at or near historic lows, according to the monthly report issued Monday by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.
    The latest state report show the county’s jobless rate stood at 4.4 percent in August, down from 5.1 percent in July and well below the 6.3 percent rate from one year earlier. Five years ago, in August of 2009, the county’s unemployment rate stood at 14.1 percent.

Homecoming week events planned throughout the week at Bellmont

     Events are planned throughout the week as part of Homecoming Week at Bellmont High School. The activities kicked off Sunday with the annual mud volleyball game. The winning team, pictured above, was comprised of, in front from left, Bailey Highlen, Ashten Worth and Miranda Lockwood. In back are Dakota Massman, Conner Hess and Jeremy Razo. Need to register to vote? There’s an app for that

     Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson has announced a new mobile voter registration app in conjunction with National Voter Registration Day. The app allows Hoosiers to register to vote, along with many other services, via their smartphone.
    Lawson said Hoosiers are encouraged to register to vote using the new app for National Voter Registration Day Tuesday, a massive 50-state effort to encourage civic participation.

Saturday storm causes low attendance for St. Marys Festival

     Another successful St. Marys Catholic Church Festival has come and gone. Pictured are deflated amusement rides as the annual event was dismantled late Sunday afternoon. Severe storms that passed through the area Saturday evening kept attendance down slightly at the festival.
 

Connect to Careers group’s goal is local workforce development

    A new group which has been operating under the proverbial radar for some two years stepped forward Tuesday night at the Decatur City Council meeting.
    Connect to Careers is now hoping to be in operation in 2015, creating career opportunities for Adams County residents.

Repairs continue to be costly for county Service Complex

    Adams County Building and Grounds Supervisor Dave Meyer approached the Adams County Commissioners Monday about replacing the gym ceiling in the Service Complex.
    Meyers reported he purchased new lights to install in the gym as part of the energy-saving upgrades recently completed at the complex. "And then it came to my attention that they thought the ceiling should also be replaced, and that they would like for the Park Board to pay 60 percent and the county 40 percent on that project," he stated.

Annexation in Decatur inches toward reality

    The City of Decatur took another step toward annexation at its Tuesday night meeting.
    It now appears Adams County Hospital and the Woodcrest Retirement Community area will be one of the areas annexed, and the other will be the wetlands along the Greenway Trail in the area south of the former Gerber’s/Community Market building.

Work on Habitat home under way

     Members of the Building Trades class at Adams Central High School were busy at the latest Habitat for Humanity house site in Berne recently, shoveling stones to create the base for what will be the garage floor. The location is on the south side of Berne and will be the residence of a Linn Grove couple and their two children. This is the second Habitat home to be erected by the 2014-15 Building Trades students, who come from Bellmont, South Adams and Norwell high schools.

 

Court site still murky after council meets

And now, the decision lies with the commissioners.
    If the Adams County Commissioners hoped an appearance before the Adams County Council would help them determine where to locate the new superior court complex, they found that not to be the case following discussions at Tuesday morning’s monthly council meeting.
