"They're all tough right now," said Adams Central coach Doug Schultz on the opponents for his eight wrestlers at the Snider Wrestling Semistate set for Saturday at the Memorial Coliseum.
"We're telling all of the kids to go there expecting to win, wrestle to win, and don't worry about if they're supposed to win, or if you're supposed to win, just take a crack and whoever is there."
Also taking eight grapplers will be Bellmont, which qualified seven to state a year ago, while South Adams will have seven competitors set for the 9:00 a.m. Saturday opening round. The semi-finals are slated for 2 p.m. and the finals at 4 p.m., but times are approximate.
Four regionals come together to make a rugged field as wrestlers from as far away as Elkhart to the west and north and Union City from the south join to make 14 fields of 16 wrestlers. With no wrestlebacks, the pressure is on all the grapplers to win two straight matches to clinch a spot in the Feb. 17 IHSAA State Individual Wrestling finals set for Conseco Fieldhouse.
A total of seven county wrestlers, six from a year ago, return with state finals experience. Back for a shot at a return trip are Bellmonters Ben Baker, Brooks Faurote and Bobby Keuneke, Todd Batt of South Adams and from AC, Zeke Schultz, Cody Walburn and Derek Roe. None have state places.
