William H. Michaels

March 16, 2011

William Howard Michaels, 73, of rural Decatur, passed away on Sunday, March 13, in the intensive care unit of Parkview Hospital at Fort Wayne.
He was born in Decatur on November 12, 1937, to Marion Michaels and Alice Gerber Michaels.
Howard graduated from Adams Central High School in the Class of 1955. He attended technical schools and graduated from an accelerated course in civil engineering created by the State of Indiana and Purdue University and worked as an inspector and engineering assistant in the bridge department.
He was deployed to France with the 122nd Tactical Fighter Wing of the Indiana Air National Guard under President John F. Kennedy.
He also was a farmer, was employed in the toolroom at the CTS plant in Berne, worked as a maintenance man at Bi-County Services in Bluffton, and retired from engineering services at EP Graphics in Berne.
He married Carolyn J. Taylor in 1965; she survives.
If you were the lady in a van stopped on US 27 with four kids on a hot summer day, this is the man who put gas in your tank to continue your journey.
This is the man who, when called in the dark of a sub-zero night, came to make your furnace run so you would not freeze.
The lost dogs of Adams and Wells counties are missing a great finder.
If you had no electricity, this man removed a tractor battery and hooked it up so your child could breathe with a humidifier.
His kindnesses were so very many and if you knew this man, you know he is redesigning and inventing in a better place.
He was so committed to his cryogenic power principles that he founded a non-for-profit 501(c)(3) corporation for alternate energy sources called DARLAP (Demonstration, Advocacy, and Research of Liquid Air Power).
At his request, his ashes are to be spread over his beloved childhood farm ground.
There are no visitations, services, or memorials.
