William F. “Bill” Baker, 86, of Decatur, a former Adams County Commissioner and Decatur City Councilman, died on Wednesday, February 2, 2011, in the extended care unit at Adams Memorial Hospital.
Bill was born on July 2, 1924, in Decatur to Fred E. and Amelia R. (Kohne) Baker.
He married Mildred I. “Millie” Blythe on February 19, 1944; she died July 23, 2001. He married L. Marie Schwartz on October 7, 2006.
Bill was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Decatur and its Holy Name Society. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and Moose Lodge 1311, both in Decatur.
He was on the Adams Memorial Hospital Board, was one of the founders of the Decatur Baseball League (DBL), and was vice-president of the DBL when Rube Wynn Field was built. Bill coached for over 20 years with the youth leagues.
He was an avid outdoorsman and sports fan.
Bill established Baker and Sons Plumbing and Heating in 1965.
He is survived by his wife, L. Marie Baker of Decatur; three sons, Mike (Mary) Baker of Decatur; Denny (Susie) Baker of Coldwater, Michigan; and Greg (Ann) Baker of Decatur; a daughter, Sandy (Ron) Hirschy of Decatur; two sisters, Alice Fullenkamp and Lucy Filips of Decatur; a stepdaughter, Claudia Rider of Indianapolis; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and three stepgrandchildren.
Bill was preceded in death by a granddaughter, four brothers, and a sister.
Visitation is 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sunday, February 6, 2011, at Haggard and Sefton Funeral Home, Decatur, with reciting of the Holy Rosary at 5 p.m.
A 9:50 a.m. prayer service will be held on Monday, February 7, at the funeral home, followed by a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. Father David Voors will be officiating.
Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Decatur.
Memorials are to St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church or to the Decatur Baseball League.
